High Plains Youth Symphony
HPYS leadership endorses and supports music education in public schools. All students in the HPYS Symphony and Sinfonietta are expected to actively participate in their school music programs and individual lessons. School music programs provide invaluable opportunities for students to participate in a multitude of musical experiences, such as All-State Orchestra, CU Honor Band, Colorado Music Educators Conference, outreach performances, and school sponsored theater productions. Public music programs also teach students important lessons about leadership and camaraderie, and instill in them the understanding of and respect for diversity. HPYS does not replace or function as a substitute for these experiences. Public music education, individual lessons from expert teachers and HPYS, in combination, provide young aspiring musicians with the comprehensive musical training that will help then discover, reach and realize their highest potential.

Requirements for Symphony
We audition musicians up to 21 years of age who are currently studying with any private teacher. Students are expected to study weekly with his/her private teacher during their enrollment in symphony. Audition requirements for all instruments are two contrasting pieces, or contrasting excerpts from one piece for a total of 7 minutes of playing time. Excerpts should display faster technical passages and slower, more lyrical, expressive passages. Students should play a 2-3 octave scale of their choice. There is no sight reading requirement. The symphony does not perform music from the Baroque era, as our core repertoire is Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Brahms. Therefore, students should be technically and musically advanced enough to meet these repertoire requirements, and select their audition material accordingly. Symphony meets on Monday evenings from 6:45 to 9:00 pm.

Requirements for Sinfonietta String Orchestra
The Sinfonietta is open to all string players in the area who are at the equivalent of Suzuki Book 4 to 8. Students should play a piece or excerpts from a piece which they really love. Their choice of music should show contrasting styles and be between 4-5 minutes of total playing time. Students will also be asked to play 3 octaves of a scale of their choice. There is no sight reading requirement. We strive to make the audition process a positive and supportive experience! The Sinfonietta meets on Monday evenings from 5:15 to 6:30 pm.
